Ao Yun

The second only vintage of Moët Hennessy’s seminal Ao Yun 2014 offers something truly unique: the first wine of its kind, the product of a brand new winery established by Moët Hennessy in the north of China’s Yunnan province, at the edge of the Himalayan mountain range. The four vineyards, spread over complimentary altitudes of 2,200-2,600m, are the result of years of extensive search to discover the perfect microclimate for viniculture in China. Similar to the Bordeaux region in terms of high-mountain identity, it offers the same maximum temperature but a lower night temperature (due to the sun disappearing behind the mountains, causing a rapid drop of 10-15°C).

The remote location and extreme terrain necessitates a natural, handmade approach to winemaking – and irrigation created by diverting snow. The results are something genuinely new and exciting: a fine wine from China that isn’t merely an investment with promising potential for the future, but is ready to be enjoyed today – and which stands comparison with some of the best wines that Europe and the new world can offer.

A harmonious, sophisticated and delicate wine, Ao Yun is a 90% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Cabernet Franc blend. With several layers of aromas which develop subtly, intertwine and evolve during the tasting, this first vintage offers an intense, persistent red fruit finish of cassis and cherry, evolving into dark currant, spices, mint, tea leaves and mild tobacco.
